The department was founded in April, 1992. Founder and long term head of the department was PhD of historic sciences, professor and Emeritus education worker of Ukraine Boldizhar Michailo Mikolayovich. Under his leadership the department became one of the banner on juristic faculty. He was significant   explorer in a field of theory, history of state and law, author of great amount of publications (The essays on history of Transcarpathia in 3 volumes,1995-2003; Transcarpatian Ukraine: state legal status and activity, 1999.) In 1994-1995 academic terms 5 stuff lecturers and  4 part time lecturers worked on the department. In 2009-2010 academic terms (the head of the department – PhD of juridical sciences, professor Lemak V.V.) educational terms pedagogical stuff on department consisted of 11 stuff scientific-pedagogical workers and 5 part time workers. Since February 2018 the head of the department was candidate of historic sciences, associate professor Halas V. Since May 2022 the head of the department is candidate of legal sciences, associate professor Peresh I.Y. 

The dynamics of growth of the qualitative stuff of the department is one of the best in Uzhhorod National University- for the last decades stuff workers of the department asserted 2 dissertations and 14 candidate dissertations. Also Lemak V.V., head of the department in the past, honored a title of professor (in 2006). In 2009 he had been elected as associate of National academy of juristic sciences of Ukraine. Since March, 2018 he holds the position of judge in Constitutional Court of Ukraine.

Among the latest scientific achievements of the department – taking part in preparation of scientific project the Great Ukrainian juridical encyclopedia : 20 vol. – X.: Law, 2017).

Public authorities use during their activity results of scientific works of the department. In February, 2013 Lemak V.V was appointed as scientific advisor of the Constitutional Assembly of Ukraine which carried out preparation of new Constitution. The department’s stuff took part in preparation of bills (“ Of political parties”,  “ Of renovation and reservation of national memory of Ukrainian people”); analytical notes to public authorities, Proclamation of the President of Ukraine to Verkhovna Rada (Supreme body of Ukraine), judgments and conclusions of Constitutional Court of Ukraine; headed the working group preparing Statute of Uzhhorod National University.

The department’s stuff constantly takes part in international and state conferences, round table discussions. Thus, on May 24-25, 2019 the teaching stuff took part in State round table discussion (Juridical faculty of Lviv National University named by I.Franko) concerning topical issues  about formation of common law competences for bachelor students in accordance to state standards of science.

International collaboration is necessary component of department’s activity. The teaching stuff participates annually in governmental and international scientific forums. Three international scientific conferences were held together with foreign colleagues. The results were published. Almost everyone from teaching stuff passed internship abroad. Some of them (Halas V.I., Baryska Y.O., Peresh I.Y., Popovich T.P.) due to the Congress of USA passed internship in the United States; according to the program of internship members learnt about organization of juridical scientific and educational establishments. Due to associate professor of the department Peresh I.Y.  in 2018, the relationship with the twin department of history of law and (Koshytsi university named by Y. Shafaryk in Slovak Republic)  was restored. Lecturers of the department teach foreign students law disciplines (Holovach A.Y., Zan M.I., Kohut M.H., Popovych T.P., Turianytsa V.V.)

The stuff teachers are also involved  state  to the process of organization and carrying out  certain upbringing events. This work is carried out by preceptors of groups, course supervisors, student self-government bodies, seniors and the public dean.

Since 2022 20 stuff teachers work on the department. Among them 15 as full time workers, 2 internal  part time workers. 3 - on external part-time (3 professors and 10 associate professors).
