A student from Romania talks about academic exchange and studying at UzhNU

Uzhhorod National University has been consistently and actively cooperating with the Erasmus+ program for many years. This creates opportunities for students and teachers for academic exchange, professional development, and intercultural interaction. Within the framework of this program, from September 1, 2025, to January 25, 2026, the Law Faculty of Uzhhorod National University hosted a student from Romania — Fetico Lavinia Nicoleta. The girl studies at the Vasile Goldiș Western University (Universitatea de Vest „Vasile Goldiș”) in Arad, majoring in Local Police.

In this interview, Ms. Lavinia shares her impressions of studying at Uzhhorod National University and how participating in the Erasmus+ program has influenced her professional and life goals.

  • How did you find out about this program and what were the main stages?

- I found out about Erasmus+ from a colleague from Palestine, who was also studying in Romania on an exchange program at the time. We became friends in the dormitory, and then she told me many interesting stories about her adventures, which greatly interested me.

The most important stage was the decision: was I ready to take this step — to go far from home and discover a different culture? However, for me, as a person who is open to new acquaintances and traditions, the answer was obvious: I said “yes” without hesitation and embarked on this international adventure.

  • What subjects did you study, and was the learning process different?

I studied criminal procedure, commercial law, civil procedure, administrative justice, sociology of law, and financial law. The main difference in the learning process was the practical approach: here, it is important not only to learn the material, but also to be able to apply the knowledge in practice, think actively, and record key ideas. At UzhNU, we also wrote a lot of notes. The learning process encourages independent thinking and the formation of your own conclusions. I really liked this format because it really teaches you.

  • Did you encounter any difficulties and how did you deal with them?

- It was difficult at first: I didn't know anyone and the city was unfamiliar. But the locals helped me, and thanks to that, it was much easier to adapt. Later, at the university, I met a girl from the first year who continued to support me. Although I didn't have many friends, each of them was very good.

I would especially like to thank Mariia Mendzul, who took care of me like a younger sister: she wrote to me at any time, asked how I was doing, called me, and was attentive and patient. Thank you from the bottom of my heart, Maria, for your support and care at the beginning of my studies!

  • What was student life like outside of school?

- In my free time, I explored Uzhhorod, a historic city with many beautiful and remarkable places.

I liked the churches the most, each with its own unique architecture and paintings — like living pictures.

I can't help but mention one funny moment: I walked everywhere, and the hills and slopes of the city left me with beautiful and strong legs.

  • What experience or skills did you gain?

This exchange taught me to always stay positive, regardless of the outcome, and to appreciate every moment, even when things get a little tough. It made me stronger and braver, helped me become more independent, and showed me that it's worth being happy even when things aren't going perfectly — because a smile really does help overcome any difficulties.

During my studies, I saw how legal norms work in practice: some are different from Romanian ones, and some are similar to what I am used to.

  • What are your overall impressions?

- My impressions are very positive. Participating in the Erasmus+ program at UzhNU was valuable both academically and personally. The university environment is open and development-oriented, and the learning process emphasizes the practical application of knowledge, which helped me better understand the material. In addition, this experience helped me become more independent, confident, and flexible in different situations.

I am sincerely grateful for this opportunity and believe that participating in the Erasmus+ program has significantly contributed to my personal and professional development.

  • What advice would you give to students planning to apply for Erasmus+?

- I would advise all students to try it at least once in their lives! It is a great opportunity to get to know yourself, step out of your comfort zone, discover new cultures, and be courageous. Don't be afraid of mistakes — every step makes you stronger. And if you come here, I will be waiting for you in Romania, at the Vasile Goldiș Western University in Arad, to continue our international adventures together. Bring your good mood and interesting stories with you!
