Professionals who stand guard over the law are trained at the Law Faculty of UzhNU

Year after year, the Law Faculty of UzhNU remains one of the most popular among applicants. The legal profession involves working with the law, its interpretation, application and protection of the rights and interests of citizens and organisations. Lawyers can work in courts, the prosecutor's office, the bar, government agencies, companies, and other organisations where knowledge of legal norms and experience in resolving legal issues are required. Dean Yaroslav Lazur tells us more about the specialities that can be obtained at the Faculty of Law of UzhNU, their relevance in today's world and employment opportunities.

– What specialisations are offered at your faculty?

– Today, students at the Faculty of Law can obtain first (bachelor's) and second (master's) degrees in the following specialisations: law (EP ‘Law’), international law (EP ‘International Law’), law enforcement (EP ‘Law Enforcement’). The faculty also trains postgraduate students in the specialty ‘Law’ at the third educational and scientific level.

– Why are the above-mentioned specialties relevant in 2025?

– Law is the foundation of society. Laws regulate almost all aspects of life: from business to marriage, from criminal punishment to environmental policy. Lawyers are needed in all areas where compliance with the law and the protection of human rights are important. The specialities offered by the Faculty of Law remain relevant in 2025 for several key reasons:

– growing international legal challenges – globalisation and international conflicts require qualified lawyers who understand international law and can work in diplomatic institutions;

– reform of the legal system – Ukraine continues to adapt its legislation to European standards, creating demand for specialists in the field of law and law enforcement;

– development of digital law – the growth of cybercrime and the need to regulate digital technologies require new legal solutions and specialists in this field;

– Demand for lawyers in business – international companies and start-ups need legal support, especially in the field of international law and corporate law.

Currently, although Ukraine is going through difficult times, the legal system is undergoing active reform. There is a growing demand for specialists who are able to implement changes, fight corruption and build a state governed by the rule of law. And let's not forget the demand for personnel in government structures (courts, prosecutors' offices, executive bodies), business (companies need lawyers for contracts, tax issues, etc.), international organisations (especially with knowledge of international law), and non-governmental organisations (human rights activities, anti-corruption, etc.).

Legal education is not only a path to a profession, but also a tool for real influence on society. The Faculty of Law is an opportunity to gain in-depth knowledge, develop critical thinking and become a specialist who not only understands the law, but also changes people's lives for the better.

– Please tell us about the new features of this year's admission campaign at your faculty.

– This year, the admission campaign for higher and pre-higher education institutions will be based on a new list of fields of knowledge and specialisations. The relevant changes were approved by Government Resolution No. 1021 of 30 August 2024. However, overall, the changes compared to last year's admission campaign are minor.

Thus, the competitive score of applicants for a Bachelor's degree based on the PZSO and NRK5 in specialities D8 ‘Law’ and D9 ‘International Law’ cannot be less than 150 points, and applicants who have scored 100 points are eligible to participate in the competition for admission to speciality K9 ‘Law Enforcement’.

To obtain a master's degree in specialities D8 ‘Law’ and D9 ‘International Law’, admission is based on NRK6 for persons who have obtained education in specialities 081 ‘Law’ or 293 ‘International Law’ and have passed the UEE and UPEE in law and international law. For specialisation K9 ‘Law Enforcement’, there are no restrictions on the specialisation of the previously obtained degree, but there is a requirement to pass the EIT and a professional exam.

- What employment opportunities are available to graduates?

- Graduates of the Faculty of Law have a wide range of employment opportunities. This is because legal experts are needed in many areas of public life. These include public service – work in state authorities, local government, the prosecutor's office, courts, and the Ministry of Justice of Ukraine; advocacy – the opportunity to become a lawyer, represent clients in court, and provide legal advice; notary services – work as a notary, drawing up legal documents and certifying documents; legal advisor – providing legal support to businesses, advising on legal issues; law enforcement agencies – work in the police, investigative bodies, the criminal justice system; scientific and teaching activities – the opportunity to work in universities, conduct research in the field of law. And this is far from a complete list of opportunities.

The advantage of a legal education is that it provides flexibility: lawyers can change their field of activity throughout their lives — from civil service to business, from science to human rights.
