Department of multicultural education and translation
The Department of Multicultural Education and Translation of State University "Uzhhorod National University" was established at the Faculty of International Politics, Management and Business in accordance with the decision of the University Academic Council dated 29 September 2014, minutes № 3.
The Department’s establishment meets the needs for multicultural education of students in the process of foreign language acquisition. Its scientific and educational activities are aimed at achieving the goal of higher educational institutions of Ukraine, i.e., training of bachelor and master degree programme students, capable of successful activities under conditions of cultural diversity. Our graduates, due to access to knowledge obtained at the second and the third language acquisition trainings, possess the skills of interethnic and intercultural communication, are culturally aware and more knowledgeable about the cultures and traditions relevant to the languages they study.
The department aim is to bring about the foreign language acquisition teaching methodology at the faculty in accordance with international standards and to meet to the full modern needs and requirements of FLA, providing students with access to effective means of mastering several foreign languages, improving the quality of the educational process in the field of professional language skills and multilingual communication as well as continuing its collaboration with training institutions through the language internship programmes. The department provides training services for "International Information", "Local History", "Management", "Marketing", "Secondary Education History", "History and Archeology" bachelor and master degree programmes. It also provides a wide range of language and interpreter/translator training services, offering a broad range of university interpreter/translator training courses within the faculty bachelor and master degree programmes in translation (English, German, French).
Students also have the opportunity to participate in the international educational project CAT for Grad, which aims to assist higher education institutions in training future translators at high level of technological competence. The prospect of such training is to obtain a certificate of professional computer technology SDL Trados European standard.

The department consists of 11 members, including 4 Candidates of Sciences and Associate Professors, 1 senior lecturer, 3 lectures and 2 assistants. The staff provides teaching of foreign languages (English, German, French, Spanish, Slovak), Foreign Languages for Professional Purposes and Translation Practic eat a high scientific and methodological level. In accordance with the modern requirements of teaching in higher educational institutions, the department has developed and delivers lectures on the theoretical disciplines: "Theory and Practice of Translation", "Higher Education Systems of English-speaking countries", "Methods of Teaching in Higher Educational Institutions", "Political and Legal Systems of English-speaking Countries».
The staff of the department pay great attention to working with students who have a penchant for research. Annual conferences are held on topical issues in the field of international relations, country studies and translation studies. Besides, the department annually holds events to celebrate the International Translator's Day. In November 2019, the department organized a role-play "Introduction of Transcarpathian monuments to the UNESCO World Cultural and Natural Heritage (extraordinary session of the UNESCO World Heritage Committee)", which aimed at solving several tasks: first, to develop students' translation skills, their ability to communicate and lead discussions on socially important topics; second, to get acquainted with the structure of UNESCO and the purpose of this organization; and third, to explore the history and culture of the native region.

In 2018, the department co-organized the international scientific and practical conference "Multiculturalism and Diversity in the 21st Century", which was held on March 27-28. The international scientific conference brought together scientists, teachers and students from 16 countries (Canada, USA, Germany, Poland, Hungary, Syria, Jordan, Japan, Indonesia, etc.). Among the plenary speakers were doctor of the Hungarian Academy of Sciences, professor Peiter Medesi (Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, Hungary), doctor of philosophy in philology, associate professor Victoria Lebovych (Eötvös Loránd University of Budapest, Hungary), Doctor Hab., professor Ildikó Vancsó (Constantine the Philosopher University in Nitra, Slovakia). Speakers were represented by the scholars from various European universities, including Paula Virag and Irina Liuba Horvat (Romania), Dr Artur Wołek and Dr Michal Wawrzonek (Poland), Masayuki Koga (Japan), Dr Éva Illés and Dr Edit H. Kontra (Hungary), Dr Ildikó Vancsó (Slovakia), Noémi Szabó, Éva Csillik, Viktória Peleskei, Darin Nshiwi, Failasofah Failsafe, Aziez Feisal, Alkhrisheh Hazim, Afshar Naeimeh, and the faculty of Uzhhorod National University: Vovkanych Ivan, Myshko Svitlana, Todorova Natalia, Popovych Natalia, Liashyna Alla, as well as scientists from other universities of Ukraine.
The conference was held in parallel in six sections on the following topics: “Multicultural education and foreign language teaching”, “Language policy and language planning”, “Language landscape – theory and practice", "Applied linguistics", "Language skills in the XXI century", "Theory and practice of translation - trends and prospects for development", "Historical and political foundations of international relations".
The staff of the department maintains close creativeties with Humanitarian Institute of the National Aviation University, with the faculty of International Relations of Lviv National University ofIvan Franko,with Drohobych State Pedagogical University of Ivan Franko, with FerencRakoczi II Transcarpathian Hungarian Institute, with the University of Warsaw (Uniwersytet Warszawski), with Wrocław State University (UniwersytetWrocławski), with the Department of Applied Linguistics (Head of Department Assoc. Prof. J. Horvath) University of Pécs (Pécsi Tudományegyetem), as well as with the Faculty of Philosophy (Associate Professor Martin Ološtiak) of the University of Prešovin Prešov (Prešovská univerzita v Prešove).
