Uzhhorod National University expands international cooperation in medical education
On 30 July, Uzhhorod National University hosted a delegation of the management team of the Ukrainian-Swiss project ‘Development of Medical Education’, implemented with the support of the Swiss Embassy in Ukraine and the Swiss Tropical and Public Health Institute.
The purpose of the visit was to deepen cooperation, familiarise with the institutional conditions for training future doctors and evaluate the effectiveness of the project components already implemented. It should be noted that since 2023, UzhNU has been one of the selected Ukrainian universities participating in the programme receiving targeted support.

Thus, during this period, a series of professional training courses for lecturers and administrative staff of the Faculty of Medicine were held at our alma mater. At the beginning of the meeting, the rector of UzhNU, Professor Volodymyr Smolanka, welcomed the participants and emphasised the strategic importance of this cooperation.
He noted that Uzhhorod is one of the few cities in Ukraine where it is possible to maintain a full offline format of education for medical students. ‘It is extremely important for us that the project supports both material resources and human development,’ added Volodymyr Smolanka.
The participants then discussed the conditions for training medical students and areas for further cooperation. The key topics of the conversation were the adaptation of educational programmes to EU standards, models of cooperation between medical education institutions and hospitals, the development of residency programmes and the modernisation of clinical training in line with European standards.

‘In order to familiarise themselves with the practical conditions of the educational process, the delegation visited the infrastructure facilities of the medical faculty, in particular the simulation centre, the department of family medicine and outpatient diagnostics, as well as the clinical base — the Interfamily medical centre,’ said Oleg Devinyak, dean of the medical faculty. Thus, the locations visited illustrated the current achievements of UzhNU in implementing a competence-based approach to training future doctors.
Support from the Ukrainian-Swiss project plays a key role in this process. In particular, the medical faculty received modern teaching and diagnostic equipment: simulators, mannequins for clinical simulation and medical instruments. In addition, a project is underway to equip the simulation centre with audio and video broadcasting systems, which will help improve the quality of the educational process and its compliance with European requirements.

Afterwards, the delegation travelled to the Carpathians to attend the summer school ‘Resilience of People and Health Systems’, which was organised and funded by the aforementioned Ukrainian-Swiss project.
