Hundreds of children learned to swim in the swimming pool of UzhNU in the summer

Sports and recreation complex of UzhNU finished the summer season with a grand event. The children, who had attended swimming classes in summer, showed how they learned to swim. Around 280 participants, the youngest one was only 5 years old, demonstrated what they had learned to do while attending health and sports club "Na start" functioning on the basis of UzhNU swimming pool. Most of them were afraid to dive into the water in the early summer, and now can easily swim 25 meter distance.

We talked about the achievements of the sports and recreation complex and plans for the new semester to Andriy Kurta, the director of UzhNU sports and recreation complex:

- At the beginning of the summer sports and recreation complex of UzhNU set the goal to improve health of  preschool and primary school children. Sport event held at the swimming pool is one of the programmes in cooperation with the sports club "Na start" (supervised by Vadym and Natalia Kolechko). They taught many kids to swim in the pool of UzhNU. The University cooperates with many famous coaches such as  Yuriy Pysarev, his grandson Mykhailo,  Popovych, Mordvintsev, Muratova and Melnyk. Groups of children from summer camps, sanatorium "Malyatko", PADIYUN and Uzhhorod gymnasium had swimming classes in our pool this summer. Migrants’ children could also improve their heath here. For two months we managed to improve the health of more than 700 children. If we count the students of the club "Na start", more than 1,000 children could learn to swim or improve their skills.

During the summer season we managed to double the attendance of the swimming pool by the  employees of such Uzhhorod companies as "Eurocar", "Jabil", "Yazaki" and others. It accordingly raised financial revenues. Over the previous three months the special fund profitability substantially increased, owing to this we managed to repair the heating system and the plumbing of the pool. Some minor repairs are to be finished and we are ready for new academic year.

 - Will it be possible to stick to the same schedule in the autumn? What are the prospects for those wishing to swim?

- We studied the schedule together with the departments and faculties. In September and October students’ training on the water won’t be intense. Therefore, we’ll be able to continue health improvement of children in the morning hours. 

 - How actively do other facilities of the sports and recreation complex of UzhNU work? What can UzhNU offer not only to students but also to Uzhhorodians?

-  In addition to the swimming pool, our gyms are also at the disposal of Uzhhorodians.  In particular, female athletes-gymnasts who rented the premises finished their training session. Boxing, karate, ping pong sports clubs have their trainings in our gyms. Ballroom dancing competition was held on the basis of our sports complex in the summer. Gyms are not so popular, but we are doing our best to activate these services too.

From the beginning of the academic tear we are fighting for the sports ground in Ukrayinska street which belongs to the Natural Sciences and Humanities College of UzhNU. This summer we have also studied the issue of reviving the ski resort of UzhNU "Plischka". The main problem is the road leading to the base. In order to get there you should walk 1 km on foot from the main road. Ski lifts and houses are in normal working condition. It is possible to accommodate 20-30 people there at the same time. Now we are trying to find ways of repairing the road by involving local authorities and forestry.

I would like to note that UzhNU sports and recreation complex started working in full force; there are human resources and professionals necessary for it. The challenges issued by the Academic Council to improve public health and develop the sports complex are successfully responded.
