‘Uzhhorod for a Clean Environment’: UzhNU administration held an eco-event to exchange recyclables for gifts

‘Uzhhorod for a Clean Environment’: UzhNU administration held an eco-event to exchange recyclables for gifts

Dozens of teachers, students and citizens joined the Uzhhorod for a Clean Environment eco-action at the administration of Uzhhorod National University. The event was timed to coincide with World Earth Day, which is celebrated on 20 March.

They collected plastic lids, batteries, plastic and paper. Special containers with instructions for proper sorting have been installed in the administration office and 14 departments of UzhNU for a long time.

Participants received brochures with tips on recycling and environmentally friendly waste management.

Alyona Almashii, Head of the Centre for Innovation and Development of UzhNU, said:

‘The aim of the campaign is to draw public attention to our common home, the planet Earth, to remind people of the need to take care of nature, to cooperate and help each other. We hold such events twice a year. Everyone who brings properly sorted garbage receives eco-gifts: eco-bags, eco-pens, T-shirts, notebooks, etc.’

The eco-event was organised jointly with the Green Varosh NGO and the Department of Culture, Youth and Sports of the Uzhhorod City Council.

Such events are held regularly. During the last event, 40 participants took part, and all the bins were overflowing with recyclables. Internally displaced people also join the initiative.

Kateryna, an employee of UzhNU, is among the regular participants of the eco-actions: ‘I am very pleased that our university supports such eco-initiatives. Today I brought plastic and paper for recycling. I also bring glass to the collection point on Bestuzhev Street near the Vopak supermarket. I always try to join such events.’

In addition, the Centre for Innovation and Development of UzhNU, in cooperation with Uzhhorod National University and the NGO ‘Zelenyi Varosh’, held an ‘Evening Eco-Dialogue’ at the YouthHub youth centre the day before.

The speaker of the event was Anna Sabodash, the head of the NGO ‘Green Varosh’. She told the youth about interesting life hacks for waste sorting and European experience in this area.

More than 30 students from the Faculties of Biology, Chemistry, Philology, International Economic Relations and Social Sciences joined the discussion.

Eco-initiatives in Uzhhorod are gaining popularity, attracting more and more people to a responsible attitude towards the environment.
