Studying in Cyprus: international experience in the heart of the Mediterranean
From 27 July to 10 August 2024, nineteen students of Uzhhorod National University had the opportunity to spend time on the shores of the sunny Mediterranean. They improved their English language skills, discovered the prospects of foreign education, and integrated into the international cultural environment and traditions of Cyprus. In addition, the students enjoyed the breathtaking scenery, magnificent mountains and warm waters of the Mediterranean Sea.
Within the framework of international cooperation between Uzhhorod National University and the British University of Central Lancashire (UCLan), the Summer School of English Language Learning was held for the third time at the University of Central Lancashire Cyprus (UCLan Cyprus). The students were accompanied by the Deputy Dean for Research and International Relations of the Faculty of Social Sciences, Associate Professor Viktoriia Svyshcho and the Deputy Dean of the Faculty of Philology for Research and International Relations, Associate Professor Olesia Kharkivska.
The selection of students was based on several criteria: the winners of the Startup-UzhNU competition, winners of international competitions, as well as students with the highest ratings in terms of educational and scientific achievements. The main condition was also successful academic mobility and English language proficiency at a level not lower than B1. In return, the University of Central Lancashire provided the students with comfortable accommodation, meals, and all the necessary study materials. An educational programme was organised for the girls in their free time. The students had the opportunity to visit the historical sights of Larnaca, Limassol, Paphos, the birthplace of the goddess Aphrodite - Petra tou Romiou, the unsurpassed beaches of Ayia Napa and other cities.
Victoria Svyshcho notes:
‘This summer I had the honour to accompany 19 talented students of UzhNU on an exciting trip to Cyprus, where we attended intensive English courses organised by the University of Central Lancashire. It was a journey that opened up new horizons and gave us invaluable experience. For two incredible weeks, the participants did not just learn English, but were completely immersed in the English-speaking world: every day they were surrounded by the language spoken by locals, teachers and even new friends from different parts of the world. They not only improved their grammar and vocabulary, but also started thinking in English. It's an incredible feeling when the language becomes a part of you, when the words come from your heart, not from a textbook. The organisation of the learning process exceeded all expectations. A professional teacher, a graduate of Cambridge University, used modern interactive methods that allowed the girls to actively interact, discuss, analyse and find solutions on their own. It was more than just learning - it was a real intellectual challenge that we all accepted with enthusiasm and enthusiasm. We should also mention the unique cultural programme prepared by the host country. Cyprus was revealed to us in all its glory. The visit to the birthplace of Aphrodite, Petra tou Romiou, was a special moment that left an indelible mark on the hearts of each of us. It was not just an acquaintance with history, but a real immersion in the cultural heritage of the island.
This summer school was more than just an English course for us. It was a real adventure that united students from different faculties of UzhNU, strengthened their team spirit and inspired them to new achievements. We returned home not only with new knowledge, but also with vivid memories and friendships that I am sure will last for many years.’
Olesia Kharkivska emphasised:
‘The opportunity to accompany nineteen of the best representatives of Uzhhorod University was an unrivalled experience, full of vivid emotions and impressions. From the very first day, we were immersed in an interesting and exciting atmosphere of learning English, as we found ourselves in an English-speaking environment. The teaching methodology was distinguished by its innovative approach, focused on individual student development and preparation for the real challenges of the modern world. Interactive learning plays an important role here, with an emphasis not only on theoretical knowledge but also on practical skills. Students were actively involved in group projects, research, discussions and debates, which stimulates critical thinking and develops communication skills. Every day, we were presented with new types of tasks and various exercises to learn and improve our English. A highly qualified teacher and modern teaching methods helped us develop both academically and personally.’
It is also worth noting the university's facilities and technical support: spacious, well-lit classrooms equipped with multimedia whiteboards, computers and air conditioning, which created the most comfortable learning environment. Each floor had recreation areas and spacious modern libraries.
I am grateful to the International Relations Department for the opportunity and to my native philology department for their support.
The students who were lucky enough to attend the language courses also share their unforgettable impressions.
Oksana Kanyuka, a master's student of the Faculty of Foreign Philology, specialist of the International Relations Department of UzhNU:
‘When I used to watch films about American teenagers and students, I always dreamed of being in their shoes. A large library, spacious classrooms and modern teaching methods. And now, thanks to Uzhhorod National University, the Department of International Relations and the University of Central Lancashire in Cyprus, my dream has come true.
Two intense weeks of learning English with a Cambridge teacher, interesting topics for discussion, grammar practice, and cooperation with like-minded people had a positive impact not only on my English level, but also on my personal development.
The Cypriot culture is very interesting and dynamic, not at all like ours. It was extremely interesting to explore the differences between the two countries. There are many things to describe: beaches with azure sea, exotic fruits growing right next to houses, friendly people, and highly qualified teachers. But, as a book lover, I liked the library the most. It was large, cosy and completely filled with books of various genres and categories, as if from a Harry Potter film. I wanted to spend time there with my English literature textbook and a cup of aromatic coffee.
I would like to sincerely thank the teachers who accompanied us during these two weeks, gave us unforgettable memories and valuable knowledge, and set an example of a true teacher.’
Alexandra Svezhentseva, 2nd year student of the Faculty of Philology
‘The English Language Summer School at the British University at UCLan Cyprus was one of the highlights of my summer. This trip was an incredible combination of interesting, intensive study and the sea, sun and walks around the cities of Cyprus.
I was most impressed by the level of English language teaching, which allowed the students to both acquire new knowledge and repeat what they had learnt. The lessons consisted of grammar exercises, reading and listening, games and conversation activities, giving each of us the opportunity to show our strengths. We worked in pairs and groups, created and presented projects, wrote, read, discussed and joked, and all in English! So, even on the hottest and busiest days, we didn't lose the desire to attend classes. No less interesting were the almost daily trips organised by the university administration, thanks to which we saw the most beautiful locations in Cyprus - Ayia Napa, Limassol, Paphos and Larnaca. Of course, for all these positive emotions, I would like to thank each of the 19 students and teachers, the leaders of our group - Victoria Svyshcho and Olesya Kharkivska - because they made these two weeks bright and unforgettable.
Each of us returned home with new knowledge, acquaintances, a tan, souvenir photos and incredible gratitude to our native UzhNU and the University of Central Lancashire for the opportunity to combine study and leisure. Such opportunities encourage students to develop and succeed, so we are all inspired to start a new academic year, study, work on ourselves and conquer new heights.’
Each of the students sincerely shares her emotions, thoughts, and impressions of the summer school. You can read more about the comments of other participants in the attachment, and Oksana Kanyuka has also prepared a video to commemorate her stay on the shores of sunny Cyprus, which can be viewed on demand: https://www.youtube.com/watch?v=r0BzMrgtwqQ
The students express their sincere gratitude for the opportunity and constant support to the Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work, Professor Myroslava Lendiel, the entire staff of the International Relations Department of UzhNU and, in particular, its head, Oksana Svezhentseva.
