Large-scale debate tournament “The Role of Historical Memory in Political Discourse” was held at UzhNU
On Wednesday, November 20, 2019, Uzhhorod National University hosted a debate tournament for the students of the university, which was attended by 48 participants, divided into 16 teams from the Faculty of Law, the Faculty of Social Sciences, the Faculty of International Economic Relations, the Faculty of History and International Relations, and Natural Sciences and Humanities College of UzhNU.
The organizers set the following goals:
1. Raise students’ awareness of how the issues of historical memory are exploited in the historical environment.
2. Facilitate student-to-student dialogue and create a safe space for discussions on historical memory issues.
3. Apply the format facilitating the exchange of views on sensitive topics where the discussion between students and professionals in the field of historical memory is favourable.
"It was one of my biggest debate tournaments, with 24 judges and 8 timekeepers, many guests and journalists," said the Tournament Coordinator, Associate Professor of the Department of International Studies and Public Communication, PhD in Political Science, and the Head of the Sustainable Development Resource Center, Hanna Melehanych.
The event was conducted by the Institute “Respublika” in partnership with the Resource Center for Sustainable Development of UzhNU, and supported by the National Democratic Institute and the editorial board of “Istorychna Pravda” of “Ukrainska Pravda”.
The general discussion topic of the debate tournament was the role of historical memory in the political discourse. It is worth mentioning that the debate took place on the basis of four debate centers in Ukraine, including Uzhhorod National University, V.N. Karazin Kharkiv National University, Volodymyr Vynnychenko Central Ukrainian State Pedagogical University, and Zaporizhzhya National University.
Finally, the first place was taken by “Femida” team representing the Faculty of Law. The national tournament will take place in Kyiv on December 9, 2019.
