UzhNU joined the Magna Charta Universitatum

Volodymyr Smolanka, the Rector of UzhNU, signed the Magna Charta Universitetum in Salamanca (Spain) at the end of September. This is the document which consolidates the main values, rights and responsibilities of the university as a key institution of society, whose activities aim to identify and disseminate the most important principles and knowledge and set the intellectual development goals for the society.

The Magna Charta Universitatum Europaeum was formally signed by 430 university rectors on September 18, 1988 in the oldest university of the world in Bologna. This time, it was signed by the rectors of 71 universities who participated in a ceremonial walk to the main square of Salamanca where the celebrations on the occasion of the 800th anniversary of the university were taking place.

 Commenting on the event, the rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka said: "We are extremely pleased to join the respectable team of the Magna Charta, which unites almost 900 leading universities in the world. It’s very gratifying to realize that the signing of the document took place at one of the oldest universities in the world and the oldest university in Spain. This year we celebrate the 73rd anniversary of our university. Our priority is to guarantee the development of higher education, support innovation and academic freedom."

During his visit to Spain, the rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka had several meetings with the rectors of some other universities and agreed on cooperation with the universities of Norway, Portugal, Greece, Austria, Croatia, Serbia and other countries.
