Ukrainian and Chinese scientists are planning to open a modern genomics research centre in Uzhhorod
The first in Central Europe Center for Genomic Research will be established this year at Uzhhorod National University. This agreement was reached during the visit of Professor Volodymyr Smolanka, the Rector of UzhNU, to the Beijing Genomic Institute, one of the two most powerful scientific and technological institutions in the world engaged in research in the field of genetics and genomic bioinformatics.
"It won’t be just a new step but a giant leap in the development of genetic science in our country, because our Chinese partners present us with the most up-to-date sequencer - a device that allows making an analysis of a complete precise sequence of nucleotides in the genome of any organism. The ability to make a genetic analysis of any tissue or tumor will be a great help not only in predicting possible diseases of a particular patient but also in selecting an individual plan for effective treatment of the most dangerous human diseases. The creation of such a center will have an important scientific and social impact. Especially I want to note the contribution of the world-famous geneticist, the director of the Caribbean Genomic Centre, assistant professor of UzhNU Taras Oleksyk, in establishing our contacts and conducting successful negotiations with our Chinese partners, in particular, the director of the Beijing Genomics Institute, Professor Yan Guangming." Said the Rector of UzhNU, Professor Volodymyr Smolanka.
The opening of the Center for Genomic Research will create new opportunities not only for domestic scientists but also for their counterparts from the scientific institutes of Central European countries working in the field of biology and medicine.
