The Academic Council considered the report on the Policy of Sustainability and Sustainable Development of UzhNU

On Tuesday, February 21, a regular meeting of the Academic Council of UzhNU was held. During the meeting, a number of important issues were discussed and approved: the Policy of Sustainability and Sustainable Development of UzhNU; educational, scientific and educational activities of the Faculty of Mathematics and Digital Technologies; recommendation of scientific works and their authors' teams for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists; creation of a department of scientific grant activity; introduction of educational activities, approval of educational and scientific programs and curricula; certification cases, etc. The meeting started with a pleasant event - the presentation of diplomas certifying the award of academic titles.

One of the key issues discussed was the Policy of Sustainability and Sustainable Development of UzhNU, reported by Vice-Rector for Scientific and Pedagogical Work, Professor Myroslava Lendiel. The project was developed by Vice-Rectors M. Lendiel, O. Rohach, D. Soyma, Assistant Rector K. Tovt, Head of the International Relations Department O. Svezhentseva, Director of the Center for Sustainable Development H. Melehanych, Director of the Center for Gender Education M. Kolodii, Director of the Center for Interdisciplinary Research S. Delegan, and leading specialist of the Center for Innovation and Development M. Stashyna-Neymet.

"This document was developed in 2021 and submitted to the meeting of the Academic Council, which was scheduled for February 24, 2022. For all known reasons, we were not able to present it then. We took a short break and reformatted the document, making several important innovations. The first of them is that we replaced the word "strategy" with "policy" because during this period Ukraine managed to become a candidate for EU membership, and this event dictates that we have certain aspirations for the provisions of European law, European standards, and, in particular, for the policy system. Namely, the principles that are encouraged to be adopted in certain organizations," said Myroslava Lendiel.

The purpose of the university's sustainability and sustainable development policy is to be an effective and proactive educational and research institution, a center of public and social life in the region, able to respond immediately to changing challenges of the environment in which it develops (sustainability) under any military, political, social and economic conditions. And also to apply the principles of respect for human rights, social and gender justice, inclusion, tolerance, democracy, environmental protection for the needs of future generations and at the same time effective economic activity in educational, research and innovation, social, economic, organizational activities (sustainability). Uzhhorod National University, along with the mission of educational, research and innovation activities, is important as a center for the preservation and development of human and social capital, to build leadership potential, strengthen civil society and form civic culture and tolerant behavior, without discrimination against different groups of people, in the paradigms of socio-economic development, environmental safety of the region, ensuring sustainability and sustainable development at the local and global levels.

It is also important that sustainability indicators are actively used in international rankings. And thanks to this, in recent years we have been ranked quite high in popular rankings - Green Metric World University Rankings, which is based on a quantitative assessment of efforts to support the sustainability of universities, and University Impact Rankings 2022, which analyzes the impact of higher education on society and the achievement of the UN Sustainable Development Goals.

In addition, Myroslava Lendiel in her report elaborated on the work done in the economic, social, organizational and environmental components that are part of the university's sustainability and sustainable development policy.

Mykola Maliar, Dean of the Faculty of Mathematics and Digital Technologies, reported on the educational, scientific and educational activities of his department. The faculty consists of four departments: Algebra and Differential Equations, Probability Theory and Mathematical Analysis, Cybernetics and Applied Mathematics, System Analysis and Optimization Theory, and a laboratory for supporting the educational process in computer classes. Training is provided in the following bachelor's degree programs:  Mathematics (educational programs: Mathematics, Computer and Business Mathematics), Applied Mathematics (educational program Artificial Intelligence Systems), Secondary Education (educational program Mathematics. Computer Science), Systems Analysis (educational program Systems Analysis); Master's level: Mathematics (educational program "Mathematics"), Applied Mathematics (educational program "Data Science and Intelligent Decisions"), Secondary Education (educational program "Mathematics. Informatics"), System Analysis (educational program "Data Processing Technologies"); preparation of PhDs: "Mathematics", "Applied Mathematics". The number of students at the faculty is growing - as of 2022-2023, 422 students are enrolled (322 students were enrolled in 2021-2022). The number of postgraduate students has also increased - currently 31 postgraduate students are studying at the Faculty of Mathematics and Digital Technologies. As for scientific work, during the reporting period, the faculty defended 3 PhD and 3 doctoral dissertations, and 3 professors and 4 associate professors were awarded academic titles. In addition, more than 90 scientific conferences were held. Representatives of the academic staff have repeatedly participated in international projects and grants. In 2023, the following research papers were nominated for the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine Prize for Young Scientists at a meeting of the Academic Council: "First-principle modeling of electronic and photonic stages in three- and two-dimensional chalcogenide crystals for functional electronics devices" by Tetiana Babuka, "Personalized correction of intestinal microbiota in common non-communicable human diseases" by Tamara Meleshko and Oleksandra Pallag, as well as "Synthesis of antibacterial functionalized condensed 1,2,4-triazoles and pyrimidines by electrophilic cyclization reactions" by Natalia Korol and Mykola Kut.

The members of the Academic Council also considered the recommendation to publish certain publications, renaming the Department of Pediatric Diseases, approving and clarifying dissertation research topics, changing supervisors and granting permission for scientific supervision, the expediency of granting a sabbatical to complete the dissertation, and more.
