On room allocation in student hostel №4: speculations and facts

Recently, a number of media simultaneously published materials of the same type on housing conditions and room allocation in university hostel №4. The publications contained too transparent allusion to the fact that there were "chosen" ones among students. Given the public outcry caused by these publications, we asked the officials of UzhNU to comment on the situation with the allocation of rooms in university hostels:

Ihor Korol, the Vice-Rector of Uzhhorod National University for academic policy and research said: "The university continues to repair its hostels. Two floors are being renovated in hostel №4 at the moment, and later it is planned to repair all the others.

Students pay 330 UAH a month for their accommodation in the hostel, which is fully compliant with the law and does not exceed 40% of the minimum scholarship. This price does not fully cover the cost of maintaining the university hostels. All the conversations about setting different prices for accomodation are erroneous. We tried to meet students’ needs and accommodate students of the same faculties together. Students living in renovated rooms were selected by student self-government and vice-deans for educational work. The criteria were simple: no complaints made against the students during their previous stay in the hostel and excellent performance in studies. These were the only criteria."

The head of the student council of hostel #4 of UzhNU Oleksandra Pekhno, who had been interviewed by one of local online editions said: "My comment was taken out of context and used by the edition for its own purposes."

The chair of the student council of UzhNU Oleksandr Varshava says: "The article deliberately depicted the worst of the worst that could be found in the hostel, although the majority of rooms are in satisfactory condition. They took the photo of the kitchen on the floor, which had not been renovated yet. I would not say that it looks destroyed, or not suitable for use. It just looks more modest compared to the renovated kitchen. I’m not going to argue it, because I know there is still a lot to be done. On the other hand, it’s takes time and efforts to repair the things that have not been repaired for decades.

Currently, major repairs are being carried out at UzhNU. I hope that in the future all the university’s hostels will be in such perfect condition as the renovated floors in hostel #4."
