World-renowned dermatologist shared his experience with medical students of UzhNU

Thomas Ruzicka - a world-renowned scientist, the head of the world's largest specialized clinic in the area (Clinic of Dermatology, Venereology and Allergology of the University of Munich), Professor, Doctor of Medicine and the Director of the Department of Dermatology and Allergology of Ludwig-Maximilians University (Munich), honorable Professor of the many famous universities of Europe and the world visited Uzhhorod on the invitation of the head of the Department of Skin and Venereal Diseases of UzhNU, Doctor of Medicine, Professor Yuriy Andrashko.

Media representatives had to wait to communicate with the professor because students just did not want to let the guest go away bombarding him with professional questions. The lecture he delivered in UzhNU was devoted to the most modern methods of diagnosing and treatment of one of the most common malignant skin tumors – basal cell carcinoma or basalioma. Unfortunately, some of these methods are currently not yet implemented in our country, - explained prof. Yuriy Andrashko. Therefore, there have been so many questions from young doctors about the details of modern diagnostic and therapeutic approaches.

Known dermatologists explained the choice of the topic for the lecture by the approach of warm season and summer holidays. The sun is one of the main factors stimulating cancer development. Therefore, it is seasonally relevant topic. Cancer dermatology is one of the main directions of modern dermatology in general. It is developing rapidly and it is very important to get information about modern methods of diagnosing and treatment for Ukrainian doctors, - said prof. Y.Andrashko.

Having communicated with students of UzhNU, Professor Thomas Ruzicka says: "The students seemed to be very interested and intelligent. The discussion in a small circle after the lecture was particularly interesting. It's nice that not only students from Ukraine study here. In particular, there was a question from a student from Africa, whether there were racial differences in dermatological diseases. And they really exist. For example, I have never seen basalioma among black people.”

Young dermatologists of UzhNU were invited by the guests to attend the Munich International Summer Academy of Practical Dermatology.  2 doctors from Uzhhorod and  a post-gradute student of prof. Andrashko from Lviv will work with the best dermatologists in Munich.

Prof. Thomas Ruzichka praised the professionalism of Ukrainian scientists, in particular, his colleague Yuriy Andrashko: "5 years ago we created a Eurasian Association of Dermatologists. It was initiated by scientists from Munich, Uzhhorod and Kyiv. Professor Andraschko is the first President of the Association, I am a Vice-President. We have already held four international congresses and are preparing the fifth one. About 50 Ukrainian dermatologists have had a chance to undergo training in the Summer Academy of Dermatologists in Munich so far. In Ukraine and in particular in Uzhhorod, I have seen many young people who have great prospects in medicine, and whose works on practical dermatology draw a wide response in Europe."

During his visit to Transcarpathia, Professor did not only work, but also had an intention to go to the mountains and visit Mukachevo, because he was from the Carpathians by origin.

As to professional issues, Professor Thomas Ruzicka advised Transcarpathians not to forget about photoprotection and use sunscreen. He also said that good health required adequate attitude to the sun.

Professor Thomas Ruzicka will soon be awarded the title of an honorary professor of UzhNU, and the guest has started negotiations with the Rector of Uzhhorod National University, Professor Volodymyr Smolanka on cooperation with the University of Munich.
