Danube Rectors’ Conference (DRC) is taking place at UzhNU

Danube Rectors’ Conference (DRC), hosted by Uzhhorod National University for the first time this year, has started its work. Due to the epidemiological situation, activities are carried out online. DRC is a network of more than 70 universities in the Danube region. The organization’s goal is to improve higher education, promote its member universities, and establish bilateral and multilateral ties between the universities. The key topic of this year’s meeting is: "The Role of University and its Resilience in the Age of Global Challenges". The conference will take place on November 10-12, 2021.

At the beginning of the event, Zdravko Kačić, the President of the DRC and the Rector of the University of Maribor, gave a welcome speech: “Until recently, we were hoping to hold a live conference in Uzhhorod. Once again I would like to express my gratitude to the Rector of UzhNU, Volodymyr Smolantka, for the hard work he has done to hold this conference, as well as to all UzhNU employees involved in its organization. It is difficult to come up with a more relevant topic for our conference. Not only universities, but also by the whole European society is facing this problem. Science is suffering from alternative facts and fake news. Politicians and scientists, unfortunately, are not working together to combat the spread of such things. Universities need to reconsider their role as knowledge leaders, especially in the times of crisis, and contribute to the creation of civil society. Once again, many thanks to all participants, I wish us all a productive day!"

The Rector of Uzhhorod National University Volodymyr Smolanka also greeted the participants: “Today I am happy to open the annual Danube Rectors’ Conference, which is held at Uzhhorod National University, online though. We need to discuss the current problems of the Danube region and the role of universities in the age of global challenges. I want to thank everyone who is present at this important event today, as well as acquaint you with our city and university. Today's event is a unique opportunity for us to exchange ideas with colleagues from different fields. I am sure that all experts and researchers will benefit from the discussions at this conference in a warm, friendly atmosphere. It is really a pity that we cannot receive you today in Uzhhorod, at our university, and communicate face to face, but everything is yet to come". Volodymyr Smolanka also told the conference delegates about Uzhhorod, its cosmopolitanism, architecture, culture and, of course, about Uzhhorod National University. In addition to general information about the university, he spoke in detail about the position of Uzhhorod National University in international rankings, publications of scientists in Scopus and Web of Science, successful cooperation of Uzhhorod National University with foreign universities and implementation of international projects.

During the first part of the conference, Prof. Alla Kinshchak and the Acting President of the National University "Kyiv-Mohyla Academy", Assoc. Prof. Oleksandra Humenna shared their views on priorities of Ukraine's presidency in the European Union strategy for the Danube region: sustainable development and human resources with the participants.

After the break, the first section of the conference began, it was moderated by the Vice-Rector of Uzhhorod National University, Prof. Myroslava Lendel.

Prof. Franz Janžeković, deputy director of the Higher Education Directorate of the Ministry of Education, Science and Sports of Slovenia reported on “Managing local, regional, national and European policies and programs in the context of sustainability - a specific issue for the implementation of the EU strategy for the Danube region". Arthur Belica, Vice-Rector, Professor of the Faculty of Medicine at University of Novi Sad, (Serbia) shared with the audience “The model of a sustainable university”. Yuriy Azhnyuk, Ph.D., Senior Research Fellow at the Institute of Electronic Physics, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine; Uzhhorod National University (part-time) prepared a report together with, unfortunately, late Professor, Vice-Rector of Uzhhorod National University Ihor Studenyak "Universities of the Danube Region - what to study and how to teach in an era of global challenges".

Vice-Rector of UzhNU Myroslava Lendel said: “The main insights of the presentations about the new challenges related, in particular, to the pandemic, are also relevant for our region and for our university. Uzhhorod National University will also address the government with the proposals that are already used by the European universities. Thank you, it was very interesting for me to hear the reports. The situation with Covid-19 was also the most painful for our university last year. Many events were postponed or canceled and we had to get used to holding many events online".

In the afternoon, the meeting of the second section will begin, as well as the ceremony of awarding the young scientists of the Danube region.
