New Medical Interns Begin Their Journey in Unique Ukrainian Program
For the past month, a new cohort of international medical interns has been immersing themselves in the innovative postgraduate medical internship program at the Uzhhorod National University. This program, specifically tailored to meet the needs of international medical graduates, provides a comprehensive and unique exposure to the Ukrainian healthcare system, blending traditional and modern medical practices.
This is the 12-month internship program that the Ministry of Health of Ukraine has introduced specifically for foreign medical graduates in General Medical Practice. This program has been structured to align with the guidelines set forth by various international medical bodies, including the National Medical Commission’s Compulsory Rotating Medical Internship Regulations (New Delhi, 2021), the Federal Laws of Germany (2023), and the standards required by the medical chambers of Poland. By adhering to these international frameworks, the program guarantees that participants receive a comprehensive and globally recognized medical education.
Currently, there are already over 20 interns in this brand-new program. Sandy, one of the new interns who has lived and studied in various parts of the world, highlights the distinctiveness of the medical approach in Ukraine. “It's a very unique medical system as opposed to the West. Having been exposed to the African, British, South Asian, and South East Asian medical systems, there is a uniqueness of overlap between traditional and modern medicine practices,” she shares.
The interns learn from local practices and are introduced to global medical guidelines. “We have been exposed to Ukrainian, European, and American guidelines for treatment and management,” Sandy continues. This cross-cultural exchange is a hallmark of the program, reflecting Ukraine's commitment to integrating diverse medical perspectives.
Beyond the academic rigor, the interns express deep appreciation for the guidance and mentorship they have received. “I appreciate each and every doctor who has offered to help us on our journey and taken the initiative to give us their time, knowledge, and experience. For me, it is a golden opportunity not to be taken lightly,” Sandy emphasizes, recognizing the invaluable support from her Ukrainian colleagues.
The personal experiences of the interns also reflect the warm and welcoming environment in Ukraine. “What I have found most enjoyable about living in Ukraine is how friendly everyone is. It is very refreshing to be around kind and selfless people like the Ukrainian people, and I have grown very fond of them too,” says another intern who recently began the program.
The interns have shared that they also feel safe while working on their internship program, since it is located in Zakarpattia - the only area of Ukraine that has not seen Russian aerial attacks. Uzhhorod’s very close proximity to four EU countries - Poland, Slovakia, Hungary, and Romania - make it an ideal location to focus on medical studies and practice while enjoying the amazing cultural mixture that the area offers.
This new medical internship program offers a unique opportunity for international graduates to gain practical experience while contributing to Ukraine's healthcare system.
