Rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka participated in international seminar on post-traumatic stress disorder

A professional advancement seminar for doctors on "Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder (PTSD)" took place in the Transcarpathian Regional State Administration on Tuesday, November 21st, 2017 Volodymyr Smolanka, the Rector of Uzhhorod National University, who is actively involved in the study of the problem and the development of this project, also participated in the seminar.

Project managers are German health scientist, occupational therapist of the University of Bayreuth Walter Rätzel-Kürzdörfer, Professors, Doctors of Medicine, Manfred Wolfersdorf and Kai Uffmann, the head of the Department of  Social Psychiatry of Bayreuth District Hospital Katharina Leichgauer and the President of the District Government of Upper Franconia, Dr. Günther Denzler.

"Cooperation between our region and Germany is incredibly important and fruitful. It is very valuable that the project managers selected such an extraordinary topic - psychological rehabilitation of warriors, heroes who take part in military operations in the east of our country. The project made it possible for our doctors and medical staff not only to listen to the lectures of outstanding scientists, but also to visit the clinics of Upper Franconia, learn about the treatment of such patients and see the conditions in which people with psychiatric disorders live. The methodical recommendations prepared as a result of this cooperation will be presented today. The most important thing is that this project will continue, develop and expand and we can see possible directions for our further cooperation, which will cover not only rehabilitation issues but also student exchange," - noted the Rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka.

Project managers emphasize that the main goal of the seminar was to identify new approaches to the treatment of post-traumatic syndrome, since the methods of treatment that are based on standard guidelines published and recommended on the basis of evidence and meta-analysis are not always effective. Such factors as therapist’s sympathy, understanding of the representatives of the clergy and other people are often decisive. All problems and their solution are provided in the manual "Diagnostics, Therapy and Rehabilitation of Patients with Post-Traumatic Stress Disorder", which was presented to the members of the seminar.
