UzhNU during martial law
In the days of the current ordeal, when again, as in 1941, Ukraine is burning in the fire ignited by the ruscist occupiers, the team of Uzhhorod National University focuses its efforts on resisting the aggressor.
Education. The Rector of Uzhhorod National University Volodymyr Smolanka issued an order according to which Uzhhorod National University students are on vacation, and the teaching staff is on paid leave from February 28 to March 13, 2022. During this period, each of them can join the nationwide resistance movement: join the Territorial Defense Forces or People's Self-Defense movement, help volunteers collect and sort the necessary things for the frontline and refugees, make camouflage nets.
Even before the beginning of the large-scale invasion by Moscow, Uzhhorod National University began to develop a plan of sending foreign students home. Thanks to the dedicated work of the Embassies of India and Hungary in Ukraine, as well as the Consulate General of Hungary in Uzhhorod, we have almost completed the transfer of Indian students to Hungary, where charter planes are waiting for them to fly them home. What concerns foreign students, Uzhhorod National University has fulfilled its duty by organizing their safe return home. Hopefully, after the victorious end of the war, they will return to Uzhhorod.
Military training. In accordance with the Law of Ukraine "On Fundamentals of National Resistance" as of 01.03.2022, teachers of the Department of Military Training of Uzhhorod National University organize classes for the staff and students of Uzhhorod National University in military training, namely weapons training and small arms. "These classes are organized and carried out in order to promote the defense of Ukraine by the widest possible involvement of citizens in actions aimed at ensuring military security, sovereignty and territorial integrity of the state, deterrence and repulse of aggression," said Colonel Vasyl Oliynyk. These classes can be attended by any citizen of Ukraine who can present his or her ID. Time: 9.00-11.00. The department also offers psychological assistance to university teachers, students and Ukrainians who suffered from the war and were forced to urgently move to Transcarpathia.
Helping the frontliners. The Volunteer Organization of UzhNU, which has significant experience in providing assistance, has been working at full capacity from the first day of the enemy attack on the Ukrainian land. The coordinator of volunteers, the Director of the Center for Sustainable Development of Uzhhorod National University, Associate Professor Hanna Melehanych says that the university volunteers are working in three main areas: helping the military at the frontline, helping refugees who came to Uzhhorod, and providing emergency assistance to people waiting in queues on the border.
First of all, we are trying to fulfill requests from the soldiers of the 128th Transcarpathian Mountain Assault Brigade. Today, they are in need of camouflage nets woven in the lobby of the adminitrative building of UzhNU, quadcopters, tactical goggles, powerbanks, flashlights, batteries, instant food, basic medicines - adhesive tape, iodine, antiseptics, etc.
We also provide refugees with medicines, hygiene products, warm clothes, and such specific but essential items as wheelchairs, crutches, etc.
People who have to queue for a long time at border crossings are provided with hot food which is served at the Faculty of Postgraduate Education, personal hygiene items, especially for small children.
Assistance to refugees. UzhNU provides accommodation in student dorms to the refugees from the cities where the most fierce battles are taking place today. According to the director of the campus Vasyl Kepych, new residents move into the dormitories every day. Some of them cross the border the next day and continue on their way, while others stay for a long time. As of March 1, there were more than 500 refugees from Kyiv, Mykolayiv, Kherson, Zaporizhia, Odesa and other cities in UzhNU dormitories. They are fully equipped with beds, bedding, room furniture. Dormitories are heated, there is hot and cold water, bathrooms, showers, kitchens. Refugies can get accommodation in university dormitories through the city headquarters for refugees, which takes care of and provides food for our compatriots.
Ukrainians together are invincible!
Glory to Ukraine!
