Ukrainian-Hungarian Educational and Scientific Institute hosted a delegation of political advisers to the EU embassies

A meeting of representatives of Uzhhorod National University and the delegation of political advisers to the embassies of the European Union took place on Monday November 27th 2017. The issues of coexistence of national minorities in the Transcarpathian region and the implementation of recently adopted law "On Education" were discussed during the meeting.

The head of the political section of the EU Delegation to Ukraine, Fabio Della Piazza, briefed the participants on the problems of the meeting, in particular the interethnic interaction in Transcarpathia, access to higher and secondary education in the languages of national minorities.

The Director of the Ukrainian-Hungarian Educational and Scientific Institute of UzhNU Oleksandr Shpenyk told about the history of the unit and the purpose of its functioning: "Our goal is to prepare teachers of physics, mathematics, history and Hungarian philology for Transcarpathian Hungarians. We teach in two languages, 70% of subjects are taught in Hungarian and 30% in Ukrainian. We want our students to have a good command of both languages." Oleksandr Shpenyk also expressed some concerns about the Law "On Education" adopted by the Verkhovna Rada of Ukraine and shared probable risks that might arise as a result of implementing the new law.

The head of the Department of Slovak Philology Svitlana Pakhomova noted that the Slovak community in Transcarpathia was not very large - less than 6 thousand people. Over the past 50 years, it has undergone some assimilation, and the work of the department was the evidence of Ukraine's desire to develop cultural and educational activities of national minorities.
