Students of the Faculty of Information Technologies of UzhNU are the winners of the Hungarian ACM Contest
Hungarian ACM Contest held on October 15, 2016 brought together 38 teams, including 5 teams representing Uzhhorod National University. Our students demonstrated brilliant knowledge that allowed them to win the 1st, 2nd, 4th, 8th and 9th places.
UzhNU was represented by such teams as Brainiacs, Magical Pony, Scanf, Eagles and Apriori. Members of the team Eagles, students of the Faculty of Information Technologies Vladyslav Yermakov, Anatoliy Potapchuk and Roman Bezmen told that the contest had been conducted on-line and the teams had had only several hours to do the given task. "We were given 5 hours to solve 10 problems on graph-theory, probability theory, automata theory and combinatorics. Each of us was working at home; we contacted each other only via the Internet. Of course, it would have been a bit easier for the team to work together in the same room, but despite such complications, we coped with the task even a little faster, "- says Vladyslav Yermakov.
His teammate Anatoliy Potapchuk says that on-line competitions have their own peculiarities. "Firstly, you immediately know your result. The computer automatically checks the result and enters it into the ranking table. Secondly, such competitions are aimed not only at getting correct answers, but also at the speed of solving the given problems. Each error was worth the time. If the team solved the problem incorrectly, its total time increased and it declined in the ranking table, as a result. Our goal was to do everything quickly and correctly."
The head of the department of information technologies and physical and mathematical sciences Oleksandr Laver explains that the achievements of the team are the result of the focused work of the faculty staff: "Our students are constantly improving their skills - says Mr. Laver. - Instructors teach students not only how to solve problems, but also how to do it quickly. The victories of our students prove that high quality education can be obtained not only abroad."
