Round table dedicated to the national competitions of the 30-40ies of the twentieth century in Transcarpathia and the history of the Carpathian Sich took place at UzhNU

On Saturday, November 11th, 2017 a scientific roundtable "Hungarian occupation of Ukrainian lands in 1939-1944 and the Carpathian Sich" took place at UzhNU. The meeting was dedicated to the 79th anniversary of the creation of the "Carpathian Sich" organization and granting of autonomy to the Carpathian Ukraine as part of the First Czechoslovak Republic in 1938. The round table was initiated by the scientists of Uzhhorod National University, representatives of the Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine and the historic club "Carpathian Ukraine".

The director of the Research Institute of Ukrainian Studies of the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine Bohdan Halayko thanked the participants for their initiative in marking important historical events. "I hope that Ukrainian issue in Transcarpathia will gain more and more attention, will be supported by the authorities in order to restore our national memory, openly look into each other’s eyes, and above all find answers to those questions which have been of special concern to us for more than a decade."

"The phenomenon of Carpatho-Ukraine is considered to be an extremely important stage in the state-building of Ukraine. We are pleased to have gathered here scientists, public figures, youth and representatives of other educational institutions, including the Rector of the A.Voloshyn Carpathian University. Some periods in the history of Transcarpathia and in the history of Ukraine are interpreted quite differently, especially now, when Ukraine is at hybrid warfare. That is why I am convinced that historians are playing an important role, because they must highlight the right points concerning the history of our region on the basis of facts, documents and realities," - said the Vice-rector of UzhNU Myroslava Lendel.

During the meeting, the scientists touched upon the historical and legal aspects of the Hungarian occupation and the annexation of Transcarpathia in 1938-1944, the struggle of the Carpathian Sich in the framework of the Ukrainian-Hungarian conflict of 1939 and the repressions against the Ukrainian population on the territory of Transcarpathia and the Ukrainian SSR in 1939-1944. During the round table attention was also paid to the issues of honoring the memory of the fallen defenders of the Carpathian Ukraine in 1939.

Bishop Viktor Bedy reported on the issue of religious factors and their use by foreign countries in the division of the Ukrainian nation. He stressed that the religious issue was still pressing, but the influence was becoming tougher. The bishop noted that there were many factors that prevented Ukraine from winning in the hybrid war, one of which was manipulations with religious issues, and he also described the mechanisms of influence and ways of avoiding them.

The director of the publishing house "Grazhda" Ivan Rebryk presented the historic club "Carpathian Ukraine" and told about the prospects of its activity.
