Public event "Choice without obstacles" was held at UzhNU

On December 8th, 2016 a public event "Choice without obstacles" was held in the lobby of the main building of Uzhhorod National University.  The event, dedicated to the International Day of Persons with Disabilities, the International Human Rights Day and the 15th anniversary of the founding of the Center for Rehabilitation of Disabled Persons "Vybir" (Choice), gathered a lot of people, and demonstrated the talent and fortitude of people with disabilities.

Organizers of the event - UzhNU and Transcarpathian Regional Center for Social and Labor Rehabilitation and Vocational Training "Vybir" - noted that the purpose of the action was to inform students about peculiarities of lives of people with disabilities and promote open society by engaging students in active volunteerism.

The event began with dance and music performances. Members of the Society for protection of children with special needs "Nadiya" (Hope) Vasyl Miryavchyk and Svitlana Solomon prepared a dance performance "Ukraine". Vocal performances were presented by Ulyana Kastran and Maryna Lavryshynets.

After the official ceremony, students had a unique chance to see a master class in fencing and overcoming barriers in wheelchairs. A master of sports of international class in wheelchair fencing, a member of Ukrainian national team Maksym Mahula, a gold medalist of the national fencing championship Nadiya Dyoloh, a new member of the team of fencers in Invasport Vadym Shutko and their coach Emilia Malyar-Fazykash arranged remarkable fencing performances for the spectators. Everybody had a chance to try on fencing outfits, hold weapons and even try fencing.

In addition, Nadiya Dyoloh held a master class in overcoming barriers which proved very challenging. Participants of the master class note that it is very difficult to move in a wheelchair, and overcoming barriers makes your arms hurt.

All the participants of the event live a full life. Young people say that their disabilities do not prevent them from acquiring education, achieving success in sports or building families. The organizers believe, that they attracted students’ attention to the problems of people with disabilities and hope to find volunteers who will really contribute to the work of the Center.
