Events dedicated to 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia are taking place at UzhNU

Students of Uzhhorod National University had a unique opportunity to communicate with Consuls General of the two neighboring states during the Days of the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic dedicated to 100th anniversary of the establishment of Czechoslovakia.  The distinguished guests who paid a visit to the university came to tell about the history and the present of two separate and prosperous countries.

Students of the Slovak and Czech departments of UzhNU, representatives of the Faculty of History and International Relations, university lecturers and journalists took an opportunity to communicate with the General and Honorary Consuls. The moderator of the event was the Vice-rector for academic policy, research and international relations of UzhNU Myroslava Lendel, who noted that students had a rare but great opportunity to ask the questions that they were interested in. "Today we have the opportunity to talk about our history, why this date is celebrated on the territory of Transcarpathia. Today you have a unique chance to ask the questions about the history or the present, and to study economic, political and socio-cultural issues of the neighboring countries "under the microscope."

Consul General of the Slovak Republic in Uzhhorod, Miroslav Mojžita, told the audience about the historical background of the establishment and dissolution of Czechoslovakia. Mr. Mojžita noted that he was often asked what was the reason for celebrating the date of establishment of the state that does not exist any longer, and his answer was: "It is important to know and respect your history, to understand the particularities of the history of Czechoslovakia during the war, in the period between the wars, and the development of historical events during the period of the Soviet Union." Miroslav Mojžita remarked that Transcarpathia played an important economic and political role in former Czechoslovakia. Today, these two separate states have a warm relationship both with local authorities and with the people of Transcarpathia in general.

Consul General of the Czech Republic in Lviv Pavel Pešek emphasized that he saw Transcarpathia as a promising land with good geographical location and all opportunities for successful economic development. "We have a good relationship with Ukraine, and we are pleased with it. We want to see Ukraine as a more successful and developed country, welcomed by all European states."

The Honorary Consul of the Czech Republic in Uzhhorod Otto Kovchar highlighted the peculiarities of the diplomacy of both republics and noted that the Czech Republic and the Slovak Republic remained the leading partners in the area of investments and economic cooperation for the Transcarpathian region.

Then, students and journalists joined the conversation. They asked questions about the present situation in the countries, their position regarding the sanctions against the aggressor country, the flow of Transcarpathian migrants to the territories of the Czech and Slovak Republics and the impact of labor migrants on the economic and social spheres in general.

A lot of questions also concerned labor and educational migration of the Transcarpathians, the opportunities for their training and further employment, as well as obtaining support from the republics for entrepreneurs from other countries. The General Consuls note that the Czech Republic and Slovakia are incredibly pleased to meet our compatriots who have a desire to work and develop within their countries because Ukrainians are known as hard-working people in Europe.
