Consultation talks on social and psychological adaptation of first-year students were held at UzhNU

During September and October 2023, Svitlana Kulakova, a leading specialist of the Department of Social and Psychological Service, held consultations on the social and psychological adaptation of 1st year students to study at UzhNU.

The purpose of conducting counselling sessions with 1st year students at UzhNU is to educate them about the peculiarities of their social and psychological adaptation, which includes:

  • Professional adaptation: career guidance adaptation; adaptation to the educational process (didactic adaptation).
  • Social adaptation: adaptation of a young person to the group, the entire student body; acceptance of the regulatory requirements of staying in higher education institutions; meaningful acceptance of moral and cultural norms; adaptation to living conditions in the dormitory.
  • Biological adaptation: adaptation of the body to new conditions (climatic, domestic, sanitary), work, sleep, physical and nervous stress, diet and nutrition.
  • Psychological adaptation: a state of psychological satisfaction/dissatisfaction, comfort/discomfort, a feeling of internal and external harmony/disharmony from successful/failure of professional, social and biological adaptation; ability to exercise psychological self-regulation of behaviour and activity.

The process of adaptation is influenced by relevant factors, which are a set of conditions or circumstances. At the moment, one of the most important priorities in the activities of the leading specialist of the Department of Social and Psychological Service is to ensure the psychological stability of students under martial law, provide them with psychological support, adaptation and support for IDP students.

During the meetings with students, special attention was paid to preventing cases of unsuccessful adaptation. Complicated adaptation can manifest itself as reduced motivation to study, doubts about the chosen profession, disruption of social ties, prolonged negative emotional experiences, or as a state of personal psychological dissatisfaction or dissatisfaction with the place of residence (due to a change of place of study, city, region, etc.).

During the counselling sessions, the freshmen were also introduced to the following:

The Law of Ukraine "On Preventing and Combating Domestic Violence" (psychological, economic, physical and sexual) and the need to comply with this Law among students living in dormitories;

the schedule of the Department of Social and Psychological Service, reception hours and the possibility of receiving free social and psychological assistance for university students, regardless of the form of study.
