Admissions to the Faculty of Economics: a conversation about specialities and employment prospects

Admissions to the Faculty of Economics: a conversation about specialities and employment prospects

Qualified economists, accountants and other professionals working in the field of economics have always been among the most popular among applicants. Not only do these professions have a high reputation for stability, but they also provide ample opportunities for career growth and development.Customs and logistics also continue to be in high demand.Specialists in these fields have significant employment potential, as their knowledge and skills are always in demand in the labour market. Due to constant changes in economic conditions and international trade, these professions are becoming even more relevant.

You will find out about the training of students at UzhNU and employment prospects in our conversation with the Dean of the Faculty of Economics, Doctor of Economics, Associate Professor Vitalii Serzhanov.

- What specialities are represented at the faculty?

This year, the following specialities are available at the Faculty of Economics for admission to bachelor's and master's degrees:

Field of knowledge - C ‘Social Sciences, Journalism and Information’:

  • • Study programme C1 ‘Economics and International Economic Relations (by specialisations)’:
  • o EP: ‘Economics’.
  • o EP: ‘Labour Economics and Human Development’

Field of study - D ‘Business Administration and Law’:

  • • Speciality D1 ‘Accounting and Taxation’:
  • o EP: ‘Accounting, Auditing and Taxation’.
  • • Speciality D2 ‘Finance, banking and insurance and the stock market’:

  • o EP: "Finance and Credit.
  • • Speciality D3 ‘Management’:

  • • Speciality D7 ‘Trade’:
  • o EP: "International Commerce.

To enter a bachelor's degree programme on a contract basis, it is enough to score at least 100 points in competitive subjects. Instead, to participate in the competition for state-funded places, an applicant must have at least 130 points. It should be borne in mind that the number of state-funded places for economics majors is decreasing every year, so competition is quite high. However, along with the state-funded form of education, there are other opportunities for financial support, including a system of grants that students can receive under certain conditions.

Advice for applicants - you should take a responsible approach to choosing programmes for admission. If studying at a particular programme is not a priority for you, it is better not to include it in the list. You should apply only to those that fully meet your interests and intentions. This way, you can avoid the risk of losing a state-funded place or grant. If you are confident in only a few programmes, then you do not have to apply for all the 5 proposed cells.

- Why are the above majors relevant in 2025?

- The specialities presented at the Faculty have always been and will be relevant. The demand for these specialists exceeds the capacity of the faculty, and in most cases, graduates find jobs immediately after graduation. Today, our students are not looking for a job, but the job is looking for them.

After the war, when it will be necessary to restore the country's economy, the demand for economists, financiers and accountants (who are already popular among employers) will increase even more. In addition, areas such as international commerce, customs, finance and logistics remain relevant and in demand

- Please tell us about the novelties of this year's admission campaign at your faculty.

- This year, the faculty has a novelty in educational programmes- the Logistics study programme will be part of the Management speciality. In addition, I would like to remind you that a single entrance exam and a single professional entrance exam have been introduced for Master's degree applicants. This degree will also maintain the popularity of specialities such as economics, finance, logistics and customs.

- What employment opportunities are available to graduates?

- Graduates of the Faculty of Economics have ample opportunities for employment in both private and public organisations, enterprises, and institutions. Most undergraduate students work while still studying (from the 3rd or 4th year).

In fact, the demand for our graduates far exceeds the faculty's capacity. We are most often asked for accountants, followed by financial directors and financial managers. Requests for specialists come from both government agencies and private companies.

Graduates of the study programme ‘Customs and Valuation’ are also in demand in the labour market. Zakarpattia has a unique geographical location - the region borders on several countries, which opens up wide opportunities for the implementation of professional knowledge and skills. Another popular study programme among employers is Finance and Credit . After all, we have a well-developed banking and insurance system and many financial institutions, which drives demand from both government organisations and private businesses.

The demand for skilled logisticians in Ukraine is consistently high, and Zakarpattia occupies a special place in this context. A large number of logistics companies are concentrated in our region, which primarily indicates a high demand for trained specialists. This is also due to Ukraine's active participation in international commerce, particularly in Zakarpattia: our country's enterprises actively cooperate with foreign partners in trade exchange and logistics operations. The study programme‘International Commerce’ falls into this category, and such specialists also have high chances of successful employment.

It is important to add that within three years, the EU funding programme: European Neighbourhood Instrument Erasmus+: KA2 CBHE ‘Integration of Higher Dual Education in Moldova and Ukraine - COOPERA’ (617490-EPP-1-2020-1-MD-EPPKA2-CBHE-SP), the Faculty has been actively implementing elements of dual education. This initiative helps to develop students' practical skills and improve the quality of education in line with the needs of the labour market.

I would also like to note that in the field of international cooperation, the Economics Department is one of the best in our university. In particular, in terms of the number of academic exchanges with European universities under the Erasmus+ programme, we have been in the lead among UzhNU faculties for the last 6 years.

In addition, the faculty, of course, actively cooperates with employers, which helps to expand employment opportunities for our graduates.
