17 moments of 2017: the most remarkable events of the year for UzhNU
At the end of the passing year, we are recalling the most interesting and important events that took place at Uzhhorod National University. Most of them are strategically important for further development of the university, because many new projects have been started this year which will directly effect the future success of the university. The most remarkable events of the year are presented in the chronological order.
1. UzhNU received the grant funding within the program "Horizon-2020". In the framework of the project, involving the total funding in the amount of 3 million euros, the scientists from Italy, Sweden, Belgium, the Netherlands, Germany, and the United Kingdom became the partners of the scientists of the Department of Solid State Electronics, Information Security of UzhNU.
2. International UzhNU Alumni Association was founded at the university. Its goal is to combine the efforts of alumni of all generations for the development of the university. Hundreds of UzhNU alumni living and working in different parts of the world have already joined the association.
3. Achievements of UzhNU have been presented at the XXVII international educational exhibition "Prospects 2017" in Warsaw. Being invitated by the Ministry of Education, Uzhhorod National University was among the 11 universities that represented Ukraine to 35 thousand Polish pupils, students and their parents.
4. The team of authors of Uzhhorod National University (the Faculty of Chemistry) has become the winner of the prize of the President of Ukraine for young scientists. Moreover, 2 projects developed by UzhNU scientists will be financed by the government of Ukraine.
5. This year has been successful for the Faculty of Information Technologies. The team of UzhNU got "silver" in the semifinals of the World Programming Championship and won the Ukrainian National Cup. The university programmers have also successfully performed at the ACM-ICPC World Finals 2017 (the USA).
6. The finals of the student innovative ideas contest "Startup - UzhNU 2017" have taken place this year. The jury selected the best 7 projects developed by young scientists-innovators representing the Faculties of Physics, Chemistry, Biology and Geography. The victory was gained by the physicists, and the startup developed by the students of the Faculty of Chemistry has already interested Brazilians.
7. UzhNU has started cooperation with Fresenius Univesity in Munich. Agreements on the double diploma program and participation in joint practical research projects have been concluded. The first project has already been implemented: the German-Ukrainian team of economists has developed a unique marketing strategy for “Fisher-Mukachevo” company.
8. UzhNU is in the top 20 universities of Ukraine. The updated results of the consolidated ranking of Ukrainian universities confirm the improvement of the university's position. In 2017 Uzhhorod National University ranked the 20th among 293 domestic institutions of III-IV accreditation levels.
9. One of the first in Ukraine and the first in Transcarpathia international PhD thesis defense for obtaining a degree of a Candidate of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics (doctor of philosophy) took place at the Faculty of Physics. The dissertation was prepared under the supervision of the head of the Department of Semiconductors of UzhNU, Doctor of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics, Prof. Yulian Vysochanskii and Doctor of Sciences in Physics and Mathematics, Prof, Alberto Oleaga from the UPV/EHU: University of the Basque Country (Bilbao, Spain).
10. A memorandum of cooperation was signed between the Law Faculty of UzhNU and an authoritative European Public Law Organization. Uzhhorod National University was offered membership in this organization. UzhNU also received a proposal to open an office of the European Public Law Organization in Uzhhorod, which might be the first in Western Ukraine.
11. Student journey to Europe. Almost 100 students of UzhNU visited the capital of France and Austria during a 5-day trip organized by the student trade union committee and the student council of UzhNU. Travellers have also visited the Italian city of Milan.
12. Philologists and programmers of UzhNU are carrying out a unique for Ukraine scientific project. They are working on the creation of an interactive map of Ukrainian language dialects, which will be posted on the website of the Society of Fans and Defenders of Ukrainian Dialects initiated and founded by the Academician Vasyl Nimchuk and presented for the first time in Uzhhorod. The development of programmers of UzhNU has already interested the Institute of the Czech Language of the Czech Academy of Sciences.
13. UzhNU has signed the Memorandum of Understanding and Cooperation with Uzhhorod City Council. Its aim is to implement joint projects and development programs. Among the directions of cooperation recorded in the Memorandum are internships of students, mutual involvement of the municipality and the university in the conduct of social, public, charitable, cultural and sporting events taking place in the city; implementation of joint projects and programs in the areas of education, science, technologies, innovations, development of the youth movement for the integrated development of the community of the city and the university.
14. UzhNU has started a new agrarian project of educational and scientific production center "Derenivka" located on the outskirts of Uzhhorod. The first 150 shrubs of two European grape varieties - Sauvignon Blanc and Chersegi Füzeleş - were planted on the area of almost 5,000 square meters. The "Derenivka" Center will serve as the basis for the practice and research of the students of the Faculty of Biology, first of all, future specialists in the area of horticulture and viticulture.
15. A meeting of the Council of the International Consortium of Universities took place at UzhNU as part of the program of celebrating the 72th anniversary of the university. Representatives of more than 15 foreign universities, members of the Consortium, participated in the meeting. Participants' speeches were dedicated to the issues related to the implementation of double diploma programs and other types of academic mobility, as well as the creation of innovative universities as one of the world trends in the development of higher education.
16. Uzhhorod National University is the winner of several exhibition contests in Kyiv. UzhNU won the grand prize of the exhibition contest in the category "Research activity of an educational institution" held as part of the XXII International Specialized Exhibition "Education and Career - Student's Day 2017", which took place in Kyiv and gathered representatives of 70 universities from different countries of the world. Our university was also awarded with an honorary title of "the leader of postgraduate education" among the educational institutions of Ukraine.
17. UzhNU signed cooperation agreement with Beijing Genomics Institute, one of the world leaders in modern genomics, at the International Forum “Innovation Market”. This year, a new laboratory of molecular genetic research has been opened at the Department of Zoology of the Biological Faculty, which in the long run should become the basis for the implementation of genetic diagnostics. Uzhhorod National University initiates the creation of a powerful educational and scientific alliance, inviting Ukrainian and European partner universities to work together with Beijing Genomics Institute to develop one of the most important contemporary sciences.
