Eco-gifts for sorted waste: UzhNU held an eco-event ‘Uzhhorod is for a clean environment’

Uzhhorod National University, along with its mission of education, research and innovation, attaches great importance to maintaining the environmental safety of the region. In February 2023, the university adopted a policy of sustainability and sustainable development, where one of the main areas is the environmental component. Environmental friendliness, recycling and rational use of resources are no longer just a trend, but a way of life for conscious citizens.

As part of a series of environmental activities implemented by Uzhhorod National University, the Centre for Innovation and Development of UzhNU together with the NGO ‘Green Varosh’ and with the support of the Department for Culture, Youth and Sports of Uzhhorod City Council held an environmental campaign ‘Uzhhorod for a Clean Environment’. The campaign lasted from 18 to 29 March and was timed to coincide with Earth Day. This holiday was introduced at the initiative of the United Nations and is celebrated internationally to draw public attention to our common home, planet Earth, to remind people of the need to take care of nature, to cooperate and help each other. Earth Day is a symbol of unity and the realisation that only through joint efforts and in a friendly atmosphere can we overcome global environmental and social problems.

Therefore, during 18-29 March, concerned Uzhhorod residents had the opportunity to bring sorted plastic, paper and glass to the UzhNU administration and exchange them for eco-gifts. In addition, other events took place as part of the eco-action: participants were taught how to sort waste properly, a film screening was held at the university, and students and staff of UzhNU made a video dedicated to Earth Day, reciting Natalia Karpenko's poem ‘The World Has Changed....’.

According to Alyona Ushakova-Almashiy, director of the UzhNU Centre for Innovation and Development, although the eco-action has ended, the idea is still being implemented: ‘Due to numerous requests, we decided to continue this initiative together with our partners Green Varosh and devote one day a month to exchanging sorted waste for a stylish eco-bag. So, stay tuned for our news. During the campaign, we managed to exchange a large amount of sorted waste for eco-gifts - according to our estimates, about 60 Uzhhorod residents took part in our campaign.’
