PROTECTING AND SHARING THE MEMORY OF THE HOLOCAUST AND THE GENOCIDE OF THE ROMA IN TRANSCARPATHIA

Title: PROTECTING AND SHARING THE MEMORY OF THE HOLOCAUST AND THE GENOCIDE OF THE ROMA IN TRANSCARPATHIA
With the support of the International Holocaust Remembrance Alliance (IHRA), an intergovernmental organization that brings together governments and experts to strengthen, promote, and facilitate education, research, and remembrance of the Holocaust worldwide, Uzhhorod National University, the NGO “Moment mitsnosti” (Uzhhorod), the French Research Center for the Humanities and Social Sciences in Prague—CEFRES (Prague, Czech Republic), and the Center for Urban History of East Central Europe (Lviv) are launching the project “Preserving and Sharing the Memory of the Holocaust and the Genocide of the Roma in Zakarpattia.”
Project Goal
The project is aimed at digitizing and utilizing understudied archival sources on the Holocaust and the genocide of Roma in Transcarpathia, as well as creating a digital platform for disseminating knowledge on this topic.
Main Objectives of the Project
The main objectives of the project are to create a digital portal containing numerous materials collected from the State Archives of the Zakarpattia and other archives, with multilingual descriptions of the documents, which will enhance their usefulness for further research. The online platform will feature a variety of content, including an archival database, images, thematic maps, glossaries, geographical objects, and a timeline. In addition, the platform will provide a comprehensive overview of the history of Jews and Roma in Zakarpattia during the Second World War, as well as its relevance from the perspective of spatial, cultural, and historical memory.
Another important objective of the project is to study the history of the Holocaust and the genocide of Roma in Zakarpattia, which lies at the intersection of Hungarian, Czech, Slovak, Romanian, and Soviet historical contexts, requiring international cooperation among experts and institutional partnerships. The interactive encyclopedic portal will be linked to the web resources of Uzhhorod National University and the Center for Urban History, thereby contributing to the dissemination of knowledge among stakeholders, including students and teachers, museums, cultural institutions, schools, and civil society organizations.
