What the year 2015 was like for UzhNU
The year 2015 is drawing to its close leaving pleasant memories. We have lived this year actively being a part of a large university family. We succeeded in implementing a lot of plans, and what is more important - successfully celebrated the 70th anniversary of our alma mater. Every faculty made an effort to organize the celebration in the best possible way. The power of the people is in their unity. So the power of university is in its unity. What kind of memories has the year of Blue Goat left for UzhNU?
AGREEMENTS
For normal functioning of the family, friendly relations with "similar ones" should be established. It is worth finding the largest possible number of like-minded people every year. Domestic and foreign partners are such adherents for the university. In 2015 the representatives of Uzhhorod National University established cooperation with Babes-Bolyai University (Romania), Graduate School of Management (Slovakia), University of Pardubice (Czech Republic), Graduate School of Business of the National-Louis University (Poland), Institute for Canon Law and Church History of Rhine of the University of Cologne, Darmstadt University of Applied Sciences (Germany), Concordia University (Canada), University of Oregon, etc. It’s worth mentioning that Uzhhorod National University signed the Memorandum on Establishing the International Consortium of Universities for cooperation in research, innovation, academic mobility, improving competitiveness, etc. This is not the whole list of university achievements in the field of international cooperation.
PROJECTS
Every person dreams about something. In order to realize the aspirations of UzhNU the department for promoting employment of university students and graduates, Sustainable Development Center, Center for support of the development of health care and public health systems, Education and Research Center for International Security and Euroatlantic integration, a unique mobile planetarium (on the site of the laboratory for space studies), the EU Information Center, Research Center of Hungarian history and Hungarian-Ukrainian relations have started functioning at the university. This is another sign that our university is evolving, looking for new forms and methods of implementing its plans.
ACHIEVEMENTS
This year, the Rector of UzhNU Volodymyr Smolanka, who is a coach of the European Association of Neurosurgeons, has been awarded the title of Doctor Honoris Causa of Vasile Goldis Western University of Arad (Romania); Vice-Rector for Research, Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor Ihor Studenyak and Doctor of Physical and Mathematical Sciences, Professor of the Department of Solid State Electronics and Information Security Volodymyr Mitsa have become Honored Workers of Science of Ukraine. The textbook "History of Ukraine from ancient times to 1648" by Professor, Doctor of History Serhiy Fedaka became the best one winning over 913 competitors in all-Ukrainian competition "Book of the Year 2014". Lubomyr Beley, Doctor of Philology, Professor of the Department of Ukrainian language became the winner of the competition in the humanities having prepared his research project "Neoruthenian movement as disintegration threat to the unity of ethnic Ukrainian area: cultural and historical aspect". Our students didn’t lag behind. They became winners of nationwide competitions in major subjects. Our team of IT students showed their best in international competitions. Moreover, they became the 54th in the world TopCoder ranking of algorithmic programming. The achievements mentioned suggest that our alma mater had a lot to be proud of in 2015.
SPORTING ACHIEVEMENTS
There are a lot of sporting victories in the treasury of achievements of UzhNU. In particular, in 2015 representatives of our alma mater won prizes in the championships and Cups of Ukraine. Moreover, they became the winners of half of the competitions. Our young people became prize-winners of European and world championships at least 5 times. They generally achieved success in such sports as kettlebell, powerlifting, Thai boxing, mixed martial arts, snowboarding, cycling, basketball, American football and fencing. It is encouraging that some sporting facilities of our institution were renovated in 2015.
RATINGS
Uzhhorod National University has actually improved its positions in many rankings this year. It ranks 39th among 200 best universities of Ukraine (evaluation conducted by the Centre for International Projects "Yevroosvita"), entered the top 30 universities of Ukraine (according to the weekly "Focus"), became the 18th in the ranking of transparency of national universities (Analytical Center CEDOS) and jumped 11 positions up in the consolidated ranking of domestic universities. Moreover, UzhNU gained the status of NVIDIA CUDA C/C++ Training Center.
GUESTS
Distinguished guests paid their visits to UzhNU in 2015. Among them there were Fulbright Program representatives, fellow scientists from Lithuania and the USA, the delegation of Vysočina region of Czech Republic and others. In late April, the Minister of Education and Science of Ukraine Serhiy Kvit visited UzhNU. He explained the innovations associated with the implementation of the Law of Ukraine "On Higher Education". We are also pleased that the celebration of the 70th anniversary of the university was attended by the representatives of nine countries and this fact is the confirmation of the credibility of our institution.
That's what our alma mater is like. The events that took place in 2015 became the history of UzhNU. The year proved fruitful, as we were moving ahead following the principle "The more we know - the more we can!"
