The results of the GreenMetric world university ranking, which evaluates educational institutions for their contribution to environmental sustainability, were recently announced. In the 2025 conclusions, Uzhhorod National University ranks 8th among 33 Ukrainian universities.
Our university's position has also improved globally. Last year, we ranked 987th, but now we have managed to climb to 901st place. This year, 1,745 universities from 105 countries participated in the ranking.
It is gratifying to note that, compared to previous results, UzhNU has shown positive dynamics. The total number of points received is 5,552.5, which is 802.5 points more than last year. The greatest progress was observed in the following areas: energy and climate change – 1310 (+335 points), waste management – 900 (+225), and water management – 462.5 (+112.5). The score also improved by 75 points in the categories of infrastructure – total score of 860, and transport – 1050 points, respectively.
Looking at the achievements of domestic universities, UzhNU rose two places compared to last year. Significant progress was observed in the category “Energy” – from 13th to 7th place, and waste management – from 10th to 7th place. The same positions were maintained in the areas of infrastructure and water management. At the international level, Uzhhorod National University is among the 1,000 best universities in the world in four out of six categories.
The UI GreenMetric World University Ranking was launched in 2010. Its goal is to quantitatively assess the efforts of universities around the world to support the environmental sustainability of their campuses. The ranking is generally based on the conceptual framework of the environment, economy, and justice. According to the compilers of this ranking, universities play an important role in the joint efforts of stakeholders and communities to combat climate change. By promoting and developing innovation, universities can contribute to energy and water conservation, waste recycling, and sustainable transport.
It should be emphasized that this ranking is an indicator of UzhNU's consistent strategy towards the 17 Sustainable Development Goals, which are aimed at overcoming poverty, eliminating social injustice, and protecting our planet. It is also the result of international project work focused on energy efficiency, mitigating the effects of climate change through regional carbon footprint reduction, and studying the impact of river pollution on environmental biodiversity.
