On October 15, 2015 the 70th anniversary of Uzhhorod National University was celebrated with a solemn meeting of the Academic Council. During the meeting famous university graduates were mentioned, congratulations from dozens of academics, politicians, clergy, diplomats and others were received.

The guests were greeted by the classical music played by the symphony orchestra of the Transcarpathian Regional Philharmonic in the lobby of the administration building of the university.

For 70 years of its existence Uzhhorod University has expanded from four faculties to twenty-one at present. 168 students started preparing for the entry on October 18, 1945 and began their study in February 1946. Nowadays Uzhgorod National University educates 13,000 students including 400 foreigners. They are taught by more than 2,000 tutors.

In his welcoming speech the Rector Volodymyr Smolanka mentioned some facts of university history and drew parallels with the present: "Today, our university takes the 30th position in all national ranking of 300 universities."The more we know, the more we can" is our slogan which unites us. Our graduates are our hallmark. There are a lot of professionals among them who have become the pride of the country. We improve our university and set new goals".

During the solemn event university teachers were awarded with hundreds of letters of commendation from the Ministry of Education and Science of Ukraine, National Academy of Sciences of Ukraine, leadership of UzhNU, regional and city councils, the regional organization of trade unions etc.  Honored guests wished the university new achievements in science and the European future, because, according to the first graduates, the age of 70 is relatively small for the university, whereas for people it is a respectable age. They wished students and teachers health, God’s grace, peace and success.

At the end of the solemn meeting Ph.D., Professor, pro-dean of the Faculty of Mathematics, Physics and Informatics of Comenius University in Bratislava Peter Kush was inaugurated with the title Doctor Honoris Causa of Uzhhorod National University.
