Commemorative plaque "To Heroes for freedom and independence of Ukraine" was unveiled in Uzhhorod
As part of the celebration of the 72th anniversary of Uzhhorod National University, a commemorative plaque "To heroes for freedom and independence of Ukraine" was solemnly unveiled in Narodna Square in Uzhhorod near the administrative building of the university on October 17th 2017.
"While unveiling this monument, we recall all the patriots who contributed to Ukraine’s Independence during the Cossack period and the World Wars, those who defended Carpatho-Ukraine, were members of the Ukrainian Insurgent Army and conducted underground struggle in Soviet times. We commemorate the Heroes who died on the Maidan, as well as those brave warriors – the defenders of the Motherland, who have been fighting for our freedom in the war taking place in the East of Ukraine for the last three years”, - said the Rector of UzhNU, Professor Volodymyr Smolanka. He stressed that several generations of students and alumni of the university fought for freedom and independence of Ukraine, and its students were among the defenders of Ukraine’s independence holding back the Russian invaders and their collaborators on Ukraine’s eastern boundaries.
