UzhNU celebrated the 20th anniversary of signing the Charter on Distinctive Partnership between Ukraine and NATO with a series of interesting events

Events dedicated to this important event began on Wednesday, March 21, 2018, with the opening of the travelling exhibition "Ukraine - NATO Security Formula", which is presented in the main building of the University and organized jointly by the NATO Information and Documentation Centre, the Ukrainian Crisis Media Centre and the Ministry of Information Policy of Ukraine.

Ceremonial opening of the exhibition gathered a lot of students, teachers and conscious citizens. Everyone here was able to get acquainted with the history of the North Atlantic Alliance, its goals and objectives, find out the methods and measures for ensuring the freedom and security of the Alliance member-states, military operations and missions, and also dot all the "i"s in the issues of security of Ukraine and the world as a whole.

The Vice-Rector for Academic Policy, Research and International Relations Myroslava Lendel greeted the participants and noted that it was a great honour for the university to host such an exhibition since it was intended to deepen young people's knowledge and dispel stereotypes about the North Atlantic Alliance.

Ihor Todorov, a Professor of the Department of International Studies and Public Communication, the director of the Center for International Security and Euro-Atlantic Integration of UzhNU, is convinced that the current event is a good opportunity to dispel those myths and to refute young people’s negative judgments regarding cooperation between Ukraine and the Alliance.

"In 2017, the 20th anniversary of the signing of the Charter on a Distinctive Partnership was celebrated, and owing to the efforts of the Ukrainian Crisis Centre such an informative and creative exhibition was prepared. Before arriving in Uzhhorod, it was successfully presented in Kyiv, Chernihiv, Sumy, Lutsk, and Lviv. Now, its exhibits are placed on display in Uzhhorod and the exhibition will be open until April 3rd." Said Ihor Todorov.

After the solemn opening, the Director of the NATO Information and Documentation Centre Barbora Maronkova invited the attendees to the stands and personally acquainted the guests with the exhibits.

On the same day, the events dedicated to the 20th anniversary of the Charter signing continued at the administrative building of UzhNU, where students could take part in the discussion "Information threats, particularly, how to avoid manipulation and distinguish propaganda" and communicate with Barbora Maronkova, the representative of the Media Crisis Centre Olesya Drashkaba, Consul General for Economic Affairs of the Consulate General of Slovakia in Uzhhorod Daniel Caban and adviser to the Directorate of the National Institute for Strategic Studies under the President of Ukraine Svitlana Mitryayeva.

Summing up the fruitful day, Professor of UzhNU Ihor Todorov noted that in terms of the national interests and national security, there was no alternative to NATO membership. "Over the past twenty years we have had a distinctive partnership, but it does not oblige anyone, and the real security guarantee is precisely the accession of Ukraine to the Alliance since Article 5 of the North Atlantic Treaty states that aggression against one country is aggression against all. If this principle of collective security had been implemented in Ukraine ten years ago, things would be different today. Our current task is to work diligently to achieve NATO standards throughout the security sector of the country and to introduce a number of reforms, which, in particular, relate to civil society and democratic transformations."
